東京観光をメインに来たゲストたちの多くが明治神宮へ行ったと言いますが、柴又の帝釈天に行った時もここは神社か、寺かとよく聞かれます。日本人の宗教観はごちゃまぜで、正月は神社へいき参拝、法事などはお寺で、そして結婚式は教会でやると説明、あまり細かく気にしていないと今まで言ってきましたが、通訳ガイドブックに明治神宮の良い説明が載っていたので、この機会にきちんと整理します。
Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan, but there,s no founder in Shinto. Shinto doesn,t have any books of scriptures, either. People believed that gods lived in many objects such as mountains,rocks, gorges, ponds, rivers and trees.Gods lives in the woods on both sides of this path we,re on now. It,s said that there are myriads of gods. Shinto is a polythestic religion.
神道は日本固有の宗教ですが、創始者はいません。書物も経典もありません。人々は山、岩、渓谷、池、川、木など多くのものに神が宿っていると信じてきました。今歩いている参道の両側にある森にも神様が住んでいらっしゃいます。八百万の神が存在していると言われています。神道は多神教なのです。
There are primarily three recognized religions in Japan. Shinto, Buddhism, and Christianity. There are about 105 million Shinto believers, and about 95 million Buddhists. The total number of Buddhists and Shintoists is about twice as large as the population of Japan. As I said, Shinto is a polytheistic religion, so the Japanese are allowed to be believers of two religions, Buddhism and Shinto.
Only two million people are Christians, but the number of non-Christians who hold wedding celemonies in church has been increasing.
日本には元来、神道、仏教、キリスト教という三つのよく知られた宗教があります。およそ一億五百万人の神道の信者と9500万人の仏教徒がいます。仏教徒と神道の信者の合計人数は日本の人口の約二倍です。神道は多神教なので、二つの宗教を持つことが許されるのです。キリスト教徒はわずか二百万人ですがキリスト教徒でないのに教会で挙式する人の数が増加しています。（ロマンティックだから）
This wodden structure is a kind of gate called "Torii". The meaning is bird,s residence. It separates the ordinary world from the sacred world. You are expected to bow in front of a Torii to pay your respects to the deities. It,s polite not to go through the center of the Torii because the deities travel through there. And you can purify yourself spiritually by going through a Torii.
この木造の建物は鳥居と呼ばれる門の一種です。鳥の住居という意味です。俗世界と神聖な世界を分けます。鳥居の前ではあなたは神様に敬意を払うためにお辞儀をしなくてはなりません。神様が鳥居の真ん中を移動されるので、鳥居の真ん中は通り抜けないことが礼儀正しいのです。そして鳥居の真ん中を通り抜けることで、自分自身のお清めをすることが出来ます。
Look at the chrysanthemum of the Torii. The crest of the imperial family is a 16-petal chrysanthemum.
”In front of the purification place” 手水舎（chouzusya）
First hold the ladle with your right hand and scoop up a ladleful of water and rinse your right hand by pouring some water over it.
Next hold the ladle with your right hand and pour some water into the cup of your left hand and rinse your mouth with it. You must be careful not to gargle with the water or drink it. Then rinse your left hand again and pouring some water over it.
Lastly you should clean the handle of the ladle with all the remaining water by holding the cup upwards and the handle downwards.
This is the purification of the ladle.Then you should put it back where it was. The Shinto way of purification is a litte bit complicated, but it is interesting.
鳥居にある菊の花を見てください。皇室の御紋で16弁の菊の花です。
”お清めの場所の前で” （手水舎）
最初に柄杓を右手で持って、柄杓に水一杯をすくい取って左手に水をかけてすすいでください。二番目に、柄杓を左手にもって右手にいくらかの水をかけてすすいでください。次に右手で柄杓を持ち、左手の手のくぼみに水を入れて口を注いでください。うがいをしたり、水を飲んだりしないように気を付けなければなりません。それからもう一度左手に水をかけて洗って下さい。最後に柄杓のカップを上にして柄を下にして残りの水をすべて使い、柄を清めます。こうして柄杓をお清めします。それから元の場所に柄杓を戻してください。神道のお清めの方法は、少し複雑ですが面白いです。
”How to pray at a Shinto shrine."
Bow slightly,throw money into the offertory box, bow deeply twice, and clap your hands twice. You should not make too many requests, limit yourself to just one. It,s polite to say thank you for everything the deity has done for you before making a wish. Bow deeply once again.This signifies the end of the prayer.
「神社でのお祈りの方法」
軽くお辞儀してお金を賽銭箱に投げ、深く二度お辞儀し、拍手を二度打ちます。多くのことをお願いすべきではありません。お祈りは一つだけにしてください。お祈りをする前に神様がしてくださったすべてのことに感謝するのが礼儀にかなっています。もう一度深くお辞儀してください。このことはお祈りの最後を意味します。
"Why do you clap your hands?"
There are three theories. The first is that you can call the deities by clapping your hands. The second is that the sound of clapping is the sound of the creation of heaven and earth. The third is that the sound of clapping hands can move the souls of the deities. The deities will then become happy and they will give good energy in return.
「なぜ拍手（かしわで）を打つのですか？」
三つの解釈の方法があります。一つ目はお祈りする人は神様を呼ぶことが出来る。二つ目は拍手を打つ音は天地創造の音である。三つ目は拍手を打つ音は神様の魂を動かすことが出来る。そうすると神様はお喜びになってそのお返しに良いエネルギーをくださいます。
初めて知ったことが多かったです。これからの説明に役に立ちます。
